It is believed that the custom of bridal showers started in Holland when a young Dutch woman fell in love with a poor miller. Her father was unsupportive and disowned his daughter. Without a dowry, she could not afford to live with him. To help the desperate young woman marry her beloved poor miller, the townspeople threw the bride a “bridal shower” and gifted her with useful gifts that equaled a dowry.
